Mercedes 190e – DBZ 179

The car was built in April 1992 and delivered to Mercedes- Benz Salisbury in June 1992. The car was sold to the managing director of a local builder’s company in Yeovil.

That period, almost everything was an optional extra from Mercedes; the car was highly specified from the factory.

  • Heated windscreen wash system
  • Cruise control
  • Four electric windows
  • Heated seats (front)
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Front armrest
  • Illuminated sun visors
  • Rear headrests
  • Additional blinker lamps
  • Electric aerial
  • Sports trim interior – sportline
  • Leather interior
  • Electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function
  • Third high level brake light
  • Cosworth body kit

When the car was three years old, the car was purchased into my family and has remained in the same ownership for the last thirty years.

Around twenty years ago, a Garrett turbo with Mossleman manifold was installed, unfortunately the company carrying out the installation did a poor job.

As a result, years later the engine required rebuilding, owing to pick up from the front crank case, during the rebuild, the decision was made to fit low compression pistons, and the brake servo from a Mercedes Cosworth, resulting in improved braking.

The brake callipers from a W124 E420 were fitted to the front and rear, and Eibach springs with Bilstein B5 shocks were also installed. The car was also fitted with genuine Evo 1 alloy wheels.

Fortunately, all the parts required were available from Mercedes, some at great cost, but worth it for the quality!

An after market front bumper had been installed to accommodate the front mounted intercooler for the turbo, although the intercooler was ok, the front bumper was of poor quality. The garage that was carrying out the rebuild of the car (Merparts Port Glasgow) had a genuine Evo 1 front bumper.

The problem was, fitting the intercooler around the genuine front bumper, the solution was to fit a charge cooler with a Bosch water pump, this allowed the genuine bumper to be fitted to the car without having to cut and modify the bumper.
